LegitChat vs iMessage: A Cross-Platform Comparison

Last updated: May 14, 2026ยท7 min

If you own an iPhone, iMessage is invisible. It is just messaging. Conversations with other iPhone users get blue bubbles, full encryption, read receipts, and high-quality media. Conversations with Android users fall back to SMS or, recently, RCS, with reduced functionality.

For Apple users with Apple-using contacts, iMessage is excellent. For everyone else, the experience falls apart at the platform boundary. And for everyone, iMessage has the same underlying problem as SMS: it accepts messages from anyone with your phone number or Apple ID, which means spam, scams, phishing, and increasingly AI-generated messages reach you whether you want them to or not.

LegitChat is built differently. It is cross-platform from day one. It uses end-to-end encryption by default for every conversation. And every message sent through LegitChat is automatically verified to come from a real human, which structurally prevents the spam and scam problems that affect iMessage and SMS today.

This page compares the two honestly. They overlap in important ways but solve different problems for different users.

What iMessage Does Well

iMessage is one of the most polished consumer messaging experiences ever built.

Seamless on Apple devices. Messages sync instantly across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. Picking up a conversation on a different device is instant and reliable.

End-to-end encryption between Apple devices. Messages between iMessage users are encrypted end-to-end by default. Apple has invested heavily in this and added enhanced data protection options.

Excellent media quality. Photos and videos sent over iMessage retain their original quality, unlike SMS or MMS which heavily compress media. Recent additions like high-quality video calls and Live Photos sync work well.

Rich features. Reactions, replies, threaded conversations, stickers, Memoji, Apple Cash, link previews, location sharing, view-once images, and disappearing messages all work natively.

Tight integration with iOS. Phone calls, FaceTime, contact suggestions, and the rest of Apple's ecosystem feel like one product.

Free with hardware. iMessage costs nothing to use if you own an Apple device.

Recent RCS support. Apple added RCS (Rich Communication Services) support in iOS 18, giving iPhone-to-Android conversations some of iMessage's features. This is an improvement, though RCS messages do not get end-to-end encryption with Android in the same way iMessage messages do between Apple devices.

What iMessage Does Not Do Well

iMessage's weaknesses are largely structural. Some are deliberate Apple choices.

Apple-only. This is the biggest one. iMessage's best experience is reserved for Apple device owners. If half your contacts use Android, half your messaging experience is broken or downgraded. RCS helps but does not solve this.

No proper Android app. There is no iMessage app for Android. The few unofficial bridges that have existed have been shut down or are unreliable.

Spam is a growing problem. Spam, phishing, and scam messages are increasingly common on iMessage. Apple has added filtering for unknown senders, but the filter is binary and incomplete. Real messages from people you do not have in contacts often end up filtered, while sophisticated scams sometimes make it through.

AI message integration is increasing. Apple Intelligence and integrations with Siri and ChatGPT mean more AI-generated content flows through iMessage. The line between a real person and an AI-assisted or AI-generated message is blurring.

Business Chat enables automated senders. Apple Messages for Business allows companies to send automated messages via iMessage. The user experience is generally polished, but it expands the surface for automated communication you did not specifically opt into.

Phone number tied identity. Like SMS, iMessage uses your phone number as a primary identifier. Number reuse, SIM swapping, and number-based discovery all bring risks.

No protection against verified spammers. If a legitimate iMessage account is being used to send spam by a real person or compromised account, iMessage has limited ability to prevent it.

How LegitChat Differs

LegitChat is not trying to replace iMessage for Apple users talking to other Apple users. It is trying to solve problems iMessage cannot.

Truly cross-platform. LegitChat ships on iOS and Android simultaneously. The same feature set on both platforms, the same encryption, the same experience.

Every message verified human. Before any message leaves a LegitChat device, it is automatically verified to come from a real human. This is the core architectural feature.

No bots, by design. There is no Business Chat equivalent. No API for automated senders. Spam scripts and marketing platforms cannot use LegitChat.

No AI senders. AI assistants and agents cannot operate as senders on LegitChat. What you receive came from a person.

No spam from unknown senders. Users can only message people they have mutually connected with. Unknown senders cannot contact you in the first place.

End-to-end encryption everywhere. Unlike iMessage, where E2EE is full-strength only between Apple devices, LegitChat applies the same end-to-end encryption to every conversation regardless of what device the other person is using.

Use Case Guidance

Use iMessage if:

Use LegitChat if:

Many people will use both. iMessage for iPhone-to-iPhone conversations that already exist there. LegitChat for the conversations you want to be sure are real, encrypted, and free of automated noise.

SMS Fallback: A Note

When you send an iMessage to someone without an Apple device, iMessage falls back to SMS or RCS. SMS is unencrypted, low-quality, and the most common channel for spam and phishing texts globally. RCS adds some structure but still does not provide the privacy of iMessage proper.

LegitChat does not have an SMS fallback because it is its own network. If you message someone on LegitChat, you know they have LegitChat, and the message is encrypted and verified human end-to-end. If they do not have LegitChat, you reach them another way. The trade-off is more friction for first contact, but no quality cliff once contact is established.

Pricing

iMessage is free for Apple device owners. LegitChat is free at launch with potential paid features in a future release. Neither runs on advertising.

The Bottom Line

iMessage is the gold standard for Apple-to-Apple messaging. If your contacts are mostly on iPhone and you live in the Apple ecosystem, it is hard to beat.

LegitChat is built for everyone else. The contacts on Android. The need for cross-platform parity. The growing problem of spam and AI messages in every messaging app, iMessage included. The desire for messaging where every message is verified to come from a real person you chose to connect with.
